What is an inflatable dog recovery collar?

An inflatable dog recovery collar is a soft, donut-shaped collar that sits around your pet's neck to prevent licking, biting, or scratching wounds, incisions, and hot spots after surgery or injury. Unlike hard plastic e-cones, inflatable collars don’t block peripheral vision and allow pets to eat, drink, and sleep normally.

Is an inflatable collar better than a plastic cone (e-collar)?

For most dogs and cats, yes. An inflatable collar like BENCMATE preserves your pet’s peripheral vision, lets them eat from a floor-level bowl at a normal angle, and allows restful sleep in any position. Hard plastic cones block vision, prevent floor feeding, and can cause anxiety. Vets recommend inflatable collars as the preferred alternative for post-surgical recovery, hot spots, skin allergies, and wound protection.

How do I choose the right size BENCMATE collar?

Measure your pet’s neck circumference snugly at the base with a soft tape measure, then add 0.5 inch. Match that number to the neck range listed for each size:

  • XS — up to 6”
  • Small — 5”–8”
  • Medium — 8”–12”
  • Medium+ — 11”–14”
  • Large — 12”–18”
  • Large+ — 14”–18”
  • X-Large — 18”–25”
  • XX-Large — 25”+

When between two sizes, always size up. See full size chart on the product page →

Can my dog eat and drink with an inflatable collar on?

Yes. The BENCMATE collar sits at the base of the neck and does not extend past the chin, so your dog can lower their head to eat from a standard floor bowl without any obstruction. This is one of the key advantages over hard plastic cones.

Can my cat use an inflatable collar after spay or neuter surgery?

Yes. BENCMATE collars are vet-approved for both cats and dogs. For cats, use the Small (neck up to 9”) or XS (neck up to 6”) size. The soft inflatable design allows normal grooming of the face and front paws and does not block vision.

How long should a pet wear a recovery collar after surgery?

Most vets recommend keeping a recovery collar on for 10–14 days after routine surgery (spay, neuter, laceration repair), and up to 21 days for orthopedic procedures. Always follow your vet’s specific instructions and keep the collar on until the incision is fully closed and confirmed healed at a recheck.

How do I inflate the BENCMATE collar?

  1. Thread your pet’s everyday collar through the inner ring loops.
  2. Use the included inflation straw to inflate through the air valve until firm and fully rounded.
  3. Fasten the velcro strap so two fingers fit underneath.

Re-inflate as needed—the valve holds air for 24–48 hours.

How do I clean the BENCMATE collar?

Remove the inflatable inner chamber and machine-wash the outer fabric cover in cold water on a gentle cycle. Air-dry only—do not tumble-dry or heat-dry. Wipe the inner chamber with a damp cloth; keep the valve dry.

What is the BENCMATE warranty?

Every BENCMATE collar comes with a one-year warranty on manufacturing defects and USA-based customer support. If your pet isn’t more comfortable in the first 24 hours than they were in a hard plastic cone, you can return it.

Can my dog sleep comfortably in an inflatable collar?

Yes. Dogs can curl up, rest their head on the collar like a neck pillow, and sleep in any of their usual positions. The soft material does not press into the floor or force the head up the way a hard cone does. Most dogs settle into their normal sleep routine within 1–2 nights.

What should I do if the collar loses air?

Re-inflate through the valve with the included straw. The collar typically holds air for 24–48 hours. If it deflates faster, check the valve seal and inspect for small punctures. A repair patch is included in every box for minor damage.
