Dog Hernia Repair Aftercare: Stitches, Activity Limits and Collar Time

After dog hernia repair, keep your dog quiet for 10 to 14 days, keep the incision dry and clean, and use a recovery collar the whole time so your dog cannot lick or chew the stitches. Mild swelling and bruising are common; a hole, discharge or a bulge that grows needs a call to your vet.

A hernia repair closes a gap in the muscle wall so tissue stays where it belongs. The new closure is held by stitches, and those stitches are under real pressure every time your dog jumps, strains or twists. That is why aftercare for a hernia is stricter than for many skin surgeries. Here is what the first two weeks look like.

How long is recovery after a dog hernia repair?

Most dogs need 10 to 14 days of restricted activity, with the skin stitches or staples coming out at about the 10 to 14 day recheck. Deeper muscle layers take longer to strengthen, so many vets ask for 4 to 6 weeks before hard play, even though the incision looks healed by week two. Your surgeon's timeline overrides any general guide, especially for larger repairs or ones that used mesh.

Umbilical hernias in puppies (often repaired during a spay or neuter) are usually the quickest. Inguinal and abdominal wall hernias, or repairs after trauma, tend to take longer. Our two-week dog surgery recovery timeline shows the general pattern.

Why does my dog need a recovery collar after hernia surgery?

The incision sits on the belly or groin, exactly where a dog can reach. One session of licking can soften the skin, pull a stitch or introduce bacteria, and an opened hernia site is a much bigger problem than an opened skin incision elsewhere. The collar needs to stay on whenever you are not watching with your eyes on the dog, including meals, naps and bathroom trips.

An inflatable collar works well for belly and groin incisions because it sits soft against the chest, lets your dog lie flat and still blocks the head from reaching back. Check that the collar is fitted properly: you should be able to slide two fingers between the collar and the neck. Our dog neck measuring guide and size chart walks through the steps. If the incision is low on the belly or near the groin, confirm that your dog cannot curl around to reach it.

What is normal after hernia repair, and what is not?

Normal in the first week:

A slightly raised, firm ridge along the incision line.

Mild bruising that turns yellow or purple, especially in light-furred or short-coated dogs.

A soft, fluid-filled swelling under the incision that is not hot or painful. This is often a seroma; see our guide to a lump under your dog's incision.

Sleeping more than usual for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Call your vet the same day if you see:

A bulge that grows, feels hot or cannot be gently pressed back.

Pus, a thick yellow or green discharge or a bad smell.

An open incision or visible tissue. Use our guide on what to do if a dog licked its incision open while you are on your way.

Repeated vomiting, a swollen hard belly, or refusing food for more than 24 hours.

Whining or yelping when picking up or touching the area.

How do I restrict my dog's activity after hernia repair?

Strain is the enemy. For the first 10 to 14 days, aim for these limits:

Leash only for bathroom breaks, 5 minutes at a time, on a short lead.

No stairs unless unavoidable, and carry small dogs. A towel under the belly can act as a sling for medium and large dogs.

No jumping onto sofas or beds. Block access or use a ramp only if your vet allows it.

Crate or a small, gated room when you are away or busy. If your dog is anxious, our guide on keeping a dog calm after surgery has ideas for calm enrichment.

Puppies are the hardest group, because a 5-month-old with a belly repair feels fine by day three. Use a puzzle feeder and chew toys that do not require running.

Can my dog sleep and eat normally with the collar on?

Yes. Dogs sleep fine in an inflatable collar once they settle, and most eat normally if the bowl is raised slightly or you hand-feed the first meal. Anesthesia can upset the stomach, so give small portions the first evening. If your dog vomits more than once, read why dogs vomit after surgery.

Dog hernia repair aftercare FAQ

Can my dog wear a T-shirt or surgical suit instead of a collar?

Some vets approve a suit for belly incisions, but dogs can chew through fabric and pull at the edges. If you use one, check it every few hours and keep the collar nearby for any time you cannot watch.

Is it normal for my dog to strain to poop after hernia surgery?

Mild straining for the first day is common after anesthesia and pain medicine. Straining that continues past 48 hours is a reason to call your vet, since hard stools can stress the repair. See dog not pooping after surgery.

When can my dog take a bath?

Keep the incision dry until the stitches are out and your vet clears it, usually 10 to 14 days. Spot-clean fur with a damp cloth well away from the incision.

When can my dog play again?

Often 4 to 6 weeks for full play after a muscle wall repair, but ask your surgeon. Our guide to when a dog can run, jump and play after surgery shows how to build back in steps.

If your vet has asked for a collar, browse the BENCMATE recovery collars for dogs and match the size to your dog's neck measurement.
