Dewclaw Removal Aftercare for Dogs: Bandage, Licking and Recovery Timeline
After dewclaw removal, keep the bandage clean and dry for the first 3 to 5 days, stop your dog licking or chewing the site for 10 to 14 days, and restrict running and jumping until the vet removes sutures or clears the wound. A little limping and a spot of blood on the first bandage are normal; swelling, a bad smell or a soaked bandage are not.
Dewclaw removal is a small surgery on a spot dogs can reach with their mouth in about one second. That is the whole challenge of aftercare: the wound itself heals well, provided your dog leaves it alone.
What does normal dewclaw removal healing look like?
Most adult dogs go home the same day with a padded bandage on the leg. Here is a typical timeline for a front dewclaw removal in an adult dog:
Days 1 to 3: mild limping, some tenderness when you touch the leg, and possibly a small pink or red spot seeping through the bandage. Your dog may sleep more while anesthesia and pain medication wear off.
Days 3 to 5: the vet usually removes or changes the bandage. Underneath, expect a short incision, 1 to 2 cm long, with sutures or skin glue. The edges should be closed and only slightly pink.
Days 7 to 10: swelling fades, limping stops, and a thin scab or scar line forms.
Days 10 to 14: non-dissolvable sutures come out. Once the vet confirms the skin has sealed, normal activity can return.
Puppies who have dewclaws removed at 3 to 5 days old heal faster, usually within a week, and rarely need a bandage for more than a day or two. The rules below still apply: keep the spot clean and watch for licking by the mother or littermates.
How do I care for the bandage after dewclaw removal?
The bandage is your first line of defense, so protect it.
Keep it dry. A wet bandage wicks moisture and bacteria toward the incision and can loosen within hours. For bathroom trips, slip a plastic bag or a medical boot over the foot and remove it as soon as your dog is back inside. Never leave a bag on for more than 15 minutes; trapped moisture causes sores.
Check the toes twice a day. The two middle toes should stay the same temperature as the other foot and should not look puffy. Cold, swollen or spread-apart toes mean the bandage is too tight. Call your vet the same day.
Watch for slipping. A bandage that has slid down the leg can rub the incision or cut off circulation below it. Do not try to rewrap it yourself unless your vet showed you how.
Change it on schedule. Most vets want to see the bandage at day 2 to 3 and again around day 5. Skipping that visit is one of the most common reasons a small dewclaw wound turns into a longer problem.
How do I stop my dog licking or chewing after dewclaw removal?
The front dewclaw sits above the paw, one of the most reachable spots on a dog's body. Plan on a physical barrier from the moment you get home until the sutures are out, around 10 to 14 days.
A recovery collar is the standard tool. Paw and lower-leg wounds are the one area where fit matters most: a dog with a long neck or a short muzzle-to-neck ratio can sometimes bend around a collar that is too narrow. When you fit the collar, sit your dog down and gently lift the operated leg toward their nose. If their tongue can touch the bandage, the collar is not deep enough for this wound. Our guide to whether inflatable collars work for tail and paw wounds explains how to test reach and when to add a second layer.
Many owners pair a collar with a lightweight dog boot or a clean sock taped loosely at the top during the day, then rely on the collar overnight. If your dog has already started working on the wrap, read how to stop a dog chewing a bandage before the chewing reaches the incision.
Bitter sprays on the bandage help some dogs, but they are a deterrent, not a barrier. Never spray them on the incision itself.
How long should my dog rest after dewclaw removal?
Rest is shorter than after a spay or orthopedic surgery, but it still matters. Every sprint, jump or scramble on a slick floor puts pressure on a fresh incision right where the leg flexes.
For the first 10 to 14 days: leash walks only, 10 to 15 minutes at a time, on grass or dry pavement. No off-leash running, fetch, dog parks or rough play with other dogs. Put rugs or yoga mats on hardwood or tile so your dog does not slip. Block stairs if your dog tends to take them at speed.
Many dogs feel fine by day 3 and act like it. That is the stage when most sutures pop. Keep the rules in place until the vet says otherwise, even if your dog is bouncing off the walls.
What are the warning signs after dewclaw removal?
Call your vet the same day if you see any of these:
Blood that soaks through the bandage or keeps spreading after the first 24 hours. Swelling in the foot or toes below the bandage. A bad smell from the bandage. Yellow, green or thick discharge. The incision opening, or sutures missing. Limping that gets worse after day 3 instead of better. Fever signs: lethargy, refusing food for more than 24 hours, or a hot, painful foot.
If your dog licked the incision open, cover it with a clean dressing, stop the licking, and call the clinic. Do not apply creams or hydrogen peroxide unless your vet tells you to.
Will the dewclaw grow back?
If the vet removed the whole bone at the base, no. If a small piece of the nail bed was left, a short, misshapen nail can regrow over the following weeks or months. It is not an emergency, but mention it at your next check-up.
Dogs who licked their dewclaw area often before surgery may keep checking the spot once they heal. If licking continues after the vet has cleared the wound, the cause may be allergies or habit rather than pain. Our article on why dogs keep licking their paws covers the most common reasons.
Dewclaw removal aftercare FAQ
How long does it take for a dog's dewclaw removal to heal?
The skin usually seals in 10 to 14 days in adult dogs and around 5 to 7 days in newborn puppies. Sutures come out at the 10 to 14 day check.
Does my dog need a cone after dewclaw removal?
Yes. The site is within reach of the mouth, so a recovery collar or other barrier should stay on for 10 to 14 days, including overnight. Check that the collar is deep enough that your dog cannot reach the paw.
Can my dog walk on the leg after dewclaw removal?
Yes. Short leash walks are fine from day 1. Avoid running, jumping and wet grass until the vet clears the incision.
Is it normal for my dog to limp after dewclaw removal?
Mild limping for 2 to 3 days is normal. Limping that gets worse, or that is still there after a week, needs a vet check.
If you are choosing a barrier for a paw or front-leg wound, see our recovery collars for paw, leg and tail injuries. Measure your dog's neck, test the reach to the paw, and keep it on until the sutures are out.
